Engage and Connect: Small Conversations in Inclusive Ministry

special needs ministry training Jul 24, 2024

As we say goodbye to summer and dive into a new school year, let's get ready to welcome a few new faces in our inclusive ministries! 🎒✨

Today we are going to talk about the power of small conversations.

What’s a small conversation, you ask? It’s a short, 2-5 minute chat with a student during their time with you, helping you get to know them better 😊. You can have these small conversations during arrival, dismissal, or during free time.

What do I talk about? Simple! Ask how they’re doing this morning or how their weekend was, and build from there! Be sure to ask questions that will help you to learn more about them, their interests, and their personal life. Remember to use AAC if your students need it to communicate.

You can engage in small conversations anytime with your students, but some key times to have small conversations are when students are new to your inclusive ministry, if they begin to engage in challenging behaviors, or when you feel like they've gone unnoticed for a bit too long! Think of small conversations as a relationship builder, and also like a relationship reset!

These small conversations show students that you genuinely care about who they are and help build a sense of trust between you and your students. 🌟

This week’s challenge: Have at least one small conversation with a new(er) student in your ministry. Let’s make every student feel welcome and valued! 🌈
